After having to cancel the event the past two years due to lack of snow, we are especially pleased to be hosting the Marine O’Brien Ski Race this year. Despite the challenges Mother Nature has thrown at us—and the recent thaw–freeze fluctuations—the ski trails at William O’Brien State Park have been groomed with exceptional care. Thanks to the dedication of the grooming team, most trails are in good shape for race day, and we are excited to move forward with the event, with a few important modifications noted below.
Please remember that the William O’Brien trail system is natural snow only, which means trail conditions are entirely weather‑dependent. Participants should expect some hard‑pack or icy patches, and there may be areas where we recommend double‑poling for safety and efficiency. B skis are recommended for this year’s conditions.
Course Modifications Likely
It is very likely that the traditional race course will be modified to remove sections that are not suitable for racing. We are actively evaluating the best‑conditioned portions of the trail and will share updated course details as soon as they are finalized. Race distances will likely be shortened. Thank you for your patience as we reconfigure the route to ensure a safe and enjoyable event.
Possible Start Time Delay
With polar temperatures forecasted for race morning, we may need to slightly delay the start time. We will continue to monitor the weather and will communicate any schedule adjustments as soon as possible.

We are excited to share that Marine O’Brien race hats will be available for the first 250 registrants, including participants whose entries were carried forward from previous years’ cancellations.

Still the oldest ski race in the Midwest. This race helps support the St. Croix Valley Ski Club and the Minneapolis Ski Club, which is teaching kids how to ski and love to ski.

Online registration is closing on January 21st. We highly encourage everyone to register online in advance of the race. After the online registration closes, the only option for registration will be on-site registration before the race. On-site registration will be $75.
