Welcome to Southern Grit Endurance Challenge
Located in south-central Kentucky, Southern Grit takes place in a landscape where rugged hills meet gently rolling terrain — a natural transition between the Appalachian Plateau and the Bluegrass region. Nestled in the distinctive “Knobs” region, steep wooded hills rise dramatically from fertile farmland, creating a striking and scenic backdrop. The race unfolds in the small community of Butchertown, in northern Casey County.
Race Overview
Southern Grit offers 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hour races, along with 3-, 6-, 12-, 24 hour ruck events, promising a true test for athletes of all backgrounds and abilities. This spectator-friendly event invites runners, families, and friends to enjoy an unforgettable weekend of endurance, camaraderie, and fun.
Main Aid Station
One of the best parts of Southern Grit Endurance Challenge is the warm, community atmosphere at our main aid station, located right at the start/finish line. We’ll also have water and Tailwind available out on the course for quick replenishment while you’re on your loop.
At the main station, you’ll find all the essentials — water, electrolytes, and classic aid station snacks — plus delicious hot food you won’t want to miss.
If you prefer self-aid, you’re in luck — you’ll pass your tent or vehicle on every loop, making it easy to grab your own food, gear, and supplies without stepping off the course.
Race Essentials
  • Full-Service Aid Station at the Start/Finish Line
  • Headlamps Required for nighttime running (bring a backup or extra batteries)
  • Course Marking: Flags and tape at all crossings
  • Cup-Free Event: Bring your own hydration system (HydraPak Speed Cups available at packet pickup)
  • Visible Race Bibs required for lap credit — each lap is chip-timed
  • Pacing & Crewing allowed
  • Rules: Unsportsmanlike conduct, course cutting, littering, or policy violations will result in disqualification

How Winners Are Determined
The Southern Grit Endurance Challenge is a timed endurance event offering 3-hour, 6-hour, 12-hour, and 24-hour race options.
  • Winners in each division are determined by the greatest total distance completed within the allotted time.
  • Distance is measured by the number of full laps completed on the official course.
⏱ End of Race Timing
  • When the race clock expires, runners may finish their current lap.
  • Only full laps completed before the final cutoff are counted toward official results.
  • Partial laps are not counted.
Tie-Breakers
In the event of a tie in total distance:
  • The runner who completed the final scoring lap first will be declared the winner.
  • If still tied, the runner with the faster overall average pace will be awarded the higher placing.
Awards
• 3 Hour: Top 3 Male & Top 3 Female
• 6 Hour: Top 3 Male & Top 3 Female
•12 Hour: Top 3 Male & Top 3 Female
• 24 Hour: Top 3 Male & Top 3 Female
• 100 Miles: Finishers will receive a special buckle for completing this distance.
Ruck Division: Top Overall Male and Female will be awarded in each event.
All Finishers: Everyone who completes their event will receive a special award!
Camping
Primitive camping is available at the race site on Friday and Saturday nights — the perfect way to fully embrace the race weekend. Each space accommodates up to a 10' x 10' tent or similar setup. Restrooms are available onsite, but no showers are provided, so come ready for a true outdoor adventure.
Dog Policy: As much as we love animals, our insurance policy does not allow dogs or pets on the premises. We kindly ask that you leave your pets at home. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Race Directors
The Southern Grit Endurance Race is organized by race directors Brian Gajus and Gordon Turner of Good Endurance Running, the team behind the Tsali Ultra in Bryson City, North Carolina, and The Pistol Ultra in Alcoa, Tennessee.Brian also serves as race director for the No Business 100 and the Yamacraw Trail Runs.
 
Getting Here
The race takes place at the historic Rousey Home Place in central Kentucky, about 50 miles south-southwest of Lexington and roughly 15 miles south-southwest of Danville, near the towns of Junction City and Hustonville.
You’ll find the property just outside Butchertown, near the Casey and Boyle County lines, along Carpenter Creek and Butchertown Roads (essentially the same road). Look for the rock entrance and follow it up the hill — at the top, take the left fork to reach the Rousey Cabin.
